Course Project: Expatriate Manager Deployment System

Project Purpose: For your project, you will develop an information seminar for hoteliers based in either the US or your home country taking a multi-year expatriate management position in the country you chose to focus on this semester.

Project Parameters: Your project will consist of a professionally written paper that could be used as a presenter’s manual and a stand-up presentation that would be suitable as an information session/job fair for managers interested in applying for the position.

Project Sections: Your project will include the following sections:


Section 1: Introduction
(anticipated length, 2 – 3 pages)

Give a brief description of the hotel in which your home country manager would be working. This hotel must be an independent property or part of a local/country/regional chain (no huge multi-nationals such as Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt or IHG). Smaller chains may be OK (please check with your professor if you have questions). Please include the name (and brand, if applicable), the location, the size, the amenities, the customers and anything else about the company or property you think someone unfamiliar with it should know. This should be an actual property located within the country you have chosen. The city, property type, etc, are at your discretion.

Section 2: Job Description and Employee Assessment Criteria
(anticipated length, 3 – 4 pages)

Include a job description for the position. This should be based on an actual management job description and adapted as necessary for the property and location described in the introduction. Explain the personal and professional qualifications an ideal candidate from the US should have. Describe the compensation and benefits package the manager taking the position will receive.

Section 3: Country Overview
(anticipated length, 5-6 pages)

Provide a very brief history of the country. Also provide a general profile to include: language(s), general cultural values, size of country, government, currency and exchange rate, climate, national holidays, food.

Section 4: Hospitality Management in ______________
(anticipated length, 12 – 14 pages)

A. Conducting Business in the Country; Manager/Owner Relations

1. Business Protocol (dress, punctuality, entertaining etc.)

2. Social Protocol (forms of address, gift giving, gestures etc.)

B. Conducting Business in the Country; Employee Relations

1. General Management Principles and Styles in country

2. Top 4 Anticipated Challenges and Proposed Solutions

Section 5: Life as an Expatriate
(anticipated length, 3 – 4 pages)

Outline what day to day living would be like for an expatriate and suggestions for how he or she could better cope with its challenges. This may include: language lessons and communication, finding a place to live and recommendations, transportation within city of residency, cost of living, etc.

Develop a list of books and/or movies that you would suggest the interested manager view to get a feel of what life would be like.

Section 6: Onsite Support and Mentoring
(anticipated length, 2-3 pages)

Describe programs you will put in place to assist the employee throughout his/her assignment

Section 7: Reentry Program
(anticipated length, 2-3 pages)

Describe how you will reintegrate employees into their lives and jobs back in the U.S. after the assignment.

Submission Guidelines:

The written portion of this project is due in 2 parts. Sections 1, 2, and 3 are due Thursday of Week 4 by the end of the day (11:59PM ET). Sections 4, 5, 6, and 7 are due Sunday of Week 7 by the end of the day (11:59PM ET).

The voiceover PowerPoint information session/orientation program is due Thursday of Week 7 by the end of the day (11:59PM ET). Remember, the presentation is only on sections 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
