Patterns of Practice Assignment Instructions

Background on Patterns of Practice

Teachers organize reading instruction in a variety of ways. While there is no one best way to teach language arts, good teachers make informed decisions based on knowledge and research. Tompkins (2016) examines the four patterns of practice and helps teachers think about how to organize and apply reading and writing strategies within the context of each instructional practice. Teachers make decisions about which model to use or how to combine elements of each to create their own eclectic model. Context is crucial. While teachers might lean towards a particular model, they must consider their students and their community when making instructional decisions. For this assignment, you will independently focus on 1 pattern of practice in 4 separate assignments.

Schedule for Patterns of Practice Assignments

Chapter 12 is a culminating chapter acknowledging the four patterns of practice. Use Chapter 12 as a reference to understand and follow the specific steps for each pattern of practice.

1. Literature Focus Units: Defined as, “teachers and students read and respond to one book.”

2. Thematic units: Defined as, “teachers and students integrate language arts with social studies, science, and other curricular areas.”

3. Literature Circles: Defined as, “students read and discuss self-selected books.”

4. Reading and Writing Workshop: Defined as, “students read self-selected books independently and write compositions on topics they’ve chosen.”

How to Set up Patterns of Practice (PoP) Activities

Each PoP activity has different components that you will include in the assignment. Review the specific steps in the textbook and modules (labeled with each activity). You do not write lesson plans for these activities; instead, you will create a cluster, concept web, or chart to show what is included in each step of the PoP. Include quality children’s literature, state standards, and address a minimum of 1 of the 6 language arts in the assignment. Submit the assignment as one Microsoft Word document and not multiple documents. See specific instructions for each PoP below.

Specific Guidelines

I. Literature Focus Units

1. Select an award-winning book as the focus.

2. Select 1 of the 6 language arts to focus on for this unit.

3. Identify 3–4 language arts standards and grade level for this unit.

4. Create a chart, cluster, or concept web to show your literature focus unit by following the 7 steps below. Include a current APA-formatted reference page.

· Step 1: Book selection

· Step 2: Standards

· Step 3: Activities (Use activities that would be appropriate for 1 of the 6 language arts in the circles.)

· Step 4: Differentiation

· Step 5: Digital resources/technology

· Step 6: Assessment

· Step 7; Schedule overview (when will this PoP be used during teacher’s language arts instruction?)

5. The title of the book must be placed in the center circle or top of the chart, with each of the outside circles/boxes representing the other steps.

II. Thematic Units

1. Choose a general topic and not a time period or historical event; these are too broad. The goal is not to teach a collection of facts, BUT to help students grapple with several big understandings.

2. Select text set of 3–5 titles, websites, or a combination of the two relating to 1 topic for theme.

3. Select 1 of the 6 language arts to focus on for this unit.

4. Identify 2–3 language arts standards and grade level for this unit.

5. Create a chart, cluster, or concept web to show your literature focus unit by following the 9 steps below. Include a current APA-formatted reference page.

· Step 1: Standards

· Step 2: Text Set

· Step 3: Textbooks

· Step 4: Digital Resources

· Step 5: Vocabulary

· Step 6: Learning logs

· Step 7: Differentiation

· Step 8: Projects

· Step 9: Assessment

III. Literature Circles

1. Choose a text set for the literature circles focusing on a topic, theme, or common genre. Books should relate in some way with a focus on either fiction or nonfiction.

2. Select 1 of the 6 language arts to focus on for the literature circles.

3. Identify 2–3 language arts standards and grade level for the literature circles.

4. Create a chart, cluster, or concept web to show your literature circles by following the 7 steps below. It is not necessary to create documents for each discussion role (called a “role sheet”). Include a current APA-formatted reference page.

· Step 1: Books/ Text Set

· Step 2: Standards

· Step 3: Circles

· Step 4: Roles

· Step 5: Schedule overview

· Step 6: Group discussions/meetings

· Step 7: Assessment

IV. Reading and Writing Workshops

1. Choose either a reading workshop or writing workshop. Clearly identify which workshop is the focus.

2. Select 1 of the 6 language arts to focus on for the workshop.

3. Identify 2–3 language arts standards and grade level for the workshop.

4. Create a chart, cluster, or concept web to show your literature circles by following the 7 steps for reading workshop and 8 steps for writing, see below. Include an APA formatted reference page.

· Step 1: Books(R) or Writing Process (W)

· Step 2: Standards

· Step 3: Procedures

· Step 4: One book read aloud (picture book or big book) (R) or Mini lessons(W)

· Step 5: Schedule overview

· Step 6: Conferences overview
