Computer databases and information networks are increasing in criminal investigations. Law enforcement can detect and solve crimes by using technology that can be helpful in criminal investigations. The criminal investigations are captured in computer databases which allow other agencies to share gathered information from other agencies. Biological evidence such as DNA and fingerprint samples can be entered into a database to develop a suspect. Touch DNA, or Trace DNA is a method for analyzing DNA left at the scene of a crime, which only a small amount of DNA collected. Touch DNA only requires several cells from the outermost layer of the human skin. The suspect leaves the epithelial skin cells with traces of the criminals NDA on the surface of whatever he or she comes in to contact with on any surface discussed by Sowmyya (2016). These skin cells can be found on any surface like a gun, clothing, or even the victim. After collecting the DNA evidence at the scene, isolation of the DNA, determination and amplification of the DNA, the Sample is now able to identify the suspect from the touch DNA profile. Sowmyya (2016)
Crime mapping and geospatial technology are useful tools in criminal investigations and can be helpful in crime prevention. With the mapping software that allows investigators to pinpoint illegal activities like auto theft, in certain areas, and it allows the investigators to explore crime patterns, offender mobility, and serial offenses over time and space. Reid (2019) According to Reid, Tita, Valasik (2019), Crime mapping is the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) to visualize and organize spatial data for more formal statistical analysis. Geospatial Technology is an emerging field of study that includes GIS, remote sensing, and GPS. Geospatial technology enables us to acquire data that is referenced to the earth and used for analysis, simulation and visualization, and modeling. These technologies have been evolving in some form since the first maps were drawn in prehistoric times. By using crime mapping, the ability to analyze auto theft patterns in specific locations, allows law enforcement to patrol in specific crime areas. The use of bait cars and sting operations are results of placing an automobile in an area where crime mapping has targeted certain area. The targeted area for high auto theft will potentially deter criminals, in which will lower the high-speed chases in neighborhoods and high populated areas. The chase between law enforcement and a criminal in a stolen automobile has many risk to the public, and if the areas are regularly patrolled, the safer the neighborhood. These tools can be used to help law enforcement in other crimes in neighborhoods like home invasions, murders, and robbery. If there is crime happening and the crime is pin-pointed, this will help narrow down high crime areas, and prevent future crimes from happening.
