S – S Proofread Analyzing Technology & State Power

Instructions:

In this unit’s learning module, you learned about technology and the state. Reflect on the moral dilemma of security vs. liberty. On the one hand, empowering the state with new technology enables it to better protect citizens from crime. On the other hand, empowering the state with new technology enhances its capacity to violate individual liberties. Now, identify a technological advancement we discussed this week. Please answer the following questions about this technology:

1. What potential benefits to the state does this technology promise?

1. What potential threats does this technology pose to the public if the state accesses it?

1. Do you think the benefits of allowing the state to use this technology outweigh the risks OR do you think the risks of allowing the state to use this technology outweigh the benefits?

1. Explain your reasoning.

Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format.

Instructions: Responses

Please respond to a minimum of two peers. In your peer response, I’d like you to include the following:

1. How do you understand the potential benefits/risks associated with the technology discussed by your classmate?

1. Do you agree or disagree with your peer’s analysis of this technology?

1. Explain your reasoning.

Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format.

I would consider the use of facial recognition software to be one of the most important technological advancements in the conversation of liberty and security and my views on the topic are two-fold.

This software would allow the government to locate and identify those who are wanted criminals, subjects from missing persons reports and even be used in an investigatory capacity to identify suspects and record offenses. Some even tout that facial recognition could be used to aid in medical response. This could potentially make law enforcement and civil servants more effective in its criminal and societal functions and perhaps even lessening the financial burden of these organizations on communities (Gargaro, 2021).

The sticky part of this technology is the discussion of liberty and what, if any, expectation of privacy a citizen would have when in public. Of course, in order for this software to be used to assist with locating missing persons and wanted fugitives, this software would be constantly working. Scanning every readable subject that passes within a distance close enough to be read. So there lies the issue. We see that this software has a large propensity for abuse, and we can point to other countries such as China and North Korea as prime examples of where this has occurred. This software is being used to monitor the behavior of the average citizenry and the data collected has been utilized to construct “safe cities” where even political dissent is effectively neutralized (Gates, 2021).

The arguments against the technology as infringements on liberty do not make a lot of sense and practically, it doesn’t really make a difference. Replace the camera with a police officer. Is it legal for a police officer to surveil you in public without probable cause or reasonable suspicion? Yes. Do police do that? No, because it’s a waste of time. They surveil people they suspect of criminal activity. If you don’t commit a crime while surveilled, in public, were your liberties taken? I’d argue not. This doesn’t however negate the risk of abuse with this type of software as I discussed above. There is most definitely a propensity for abuse and honestly, the risk without question outweighs the benefit.

In a perfect world where the government could be trusted to protect the rights of every citizen, regardless of political ideology or affiliation, there would be no argument against the public use of this software in public areas. As a person, you recognize people you see in public, and this is not an infringement on the recognized party’s privacy. Using the same stream of logic, this software is no different. I personally hold individual liberty in high regard as one of the most important tenants that we have as American citizens and that we should protect this liberty at all costs. In conclusion, just because we could, doesn’t mean we should.

This week we are talking about analyzing Technology and State Power. Technology poses many opportunities for taking in and spreading information. Taking in information in a way like surveillance such as facial recognition, drones, tracking devices, and more (Realize It). These aspects allow the state to keep track of things that are happening as well as looking back and understand a series of events. Technology also helps spread information through television, social media, and news coverage.

With positives, almost always come negatives. First starting with taking information in this can be seen as a vast invasion of privacy. When the state knows where you are and what you are doing is a bit of a scary subject. In the eyes of spreading information, this can be distributed as propaganda. Propaganda is defined as “the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person” (Merriam-Webster). Because the news is so widely accepted, the state can place any information on the screen, and the majority will believe what they see without even fact-checking, because why should we have to?

I think the risks do outweigh the benefits. For security purposes having surveillance allows for a safer state. The most significant advantage of this technological advancement is the catching of criminals. Hopefully, with eyes in the sky and an increasing rate of catching criminals, crime rates will decrease. It is a bit of an invasion of privacy, depending on where the cameras are and where drones are flying; however, you have little to worry about if you are not doing something wrong. Spreading information can be a good thing. Getting information out to the public is very important. However, it is also essential for society to understand not everything they read is true. With that said, we must fact-check and do our own research on topics we feel strongly about.
